Everyone is welcome at the annual Big Southern Butte fly-in hike on Independence Day, July 4. I’m planning to leave IDA about 7 and be at the airstrip at 8 (slow plane). Everyone is welcome, and showing up is does not obligate you to do the hike. I allow 5 hours for the round trip to the summit on foot; your mileage may vary.  The airstrip is located conveniently to the trail head, and the hike is 5 miles up with 2500 feet of elevation gain. Walking poles are helpful on the descent on ‘ball-bearing’ gravel. Latest local recon report is that the road is deeply rutted, which should not affect hikers but may limit the ATV traffic. Let me know if you plan to attend, and especially if you have an open seat. Remember, flying with an empty seat is a misdemeanor!
