SUMMARY:Fly-In Hike at Big Southern Butte (U46)
DESCRIPTION:July 4\, 2018 — 8 a.m.\nEveryone is welcome at the annual Big Southern Butte fly-in hike on Independence Day\, July 4. I’m planning to leave IDA about 7 and be at the airstrip at 8 (slow plane). Everyone is welcome\, and showing up is does not obligate you to do the hike. I allow 5 hours for the round trip to the summit on foot; your mileage may vary.  The airstrip is located conveniently to the trail head\, and the hike is 5 miles up with 2500 feet of elevation gain. Walking poles are helpful on the descent on ‘ball-bearing’ gravel. Latest local recon report is that the road is deeply rutted\, which should not affect hikers but may limit the ATV traffic.
